WELCOME TO ISRAEL, BRITAIN AND THE COMMONWEALTH ASSOCIATION

The Association holds regular meetings when distinguished speakers address the members and their guests on a wide range of subjects. Speakers have included members of the Israeli Government, members of the Knesset, representatives of the Foreign Ministry, Israel's Attorney General, editors of national newspapers, Palestinian journalists and members of the Diplomatic Corps serving in Israel.

The principal event of the IBCA calendar is the Annual Balfour Dinner held to celebrate The Balfour Declaration of 1917. This Declaration, coming in the form of a letter from the Foreign Secretary Arthur James Balfour to Lord Rothschild, a leading British Zionist, is often seen as the initiation of the process leading to the establishment of the State of Israel. The dinner provides an opportunity for members and friends to meet with an impressive representation of the Diplomatic Corps accredited to the State of Israel.

Traditionally this prestigious event is addressed by leaders of Israel and Great Britain. Past speakers have included - from the UK - The Earl of Balfour; Sir Malcolm Rifkind; Lord Levine, then Lord Mayor of London; Gen. Lord Guthrie, Attorney General; the Rt Hon The Lord Goldsmith QC; The Rt Hon William Hague, Shadow Foreign Secretary, and Prime Minster Gordon Brown. From Israel we were privileged to hear the President of the State of Israel, Chaim Herzog; Yitzhak Rabin; Professor Amnon Rubinstein; Shimon Peres; Professor Shlomo Ben-Ami; Tzipi Livni, Leader of the Opposition, and Dan Gillerman amongst others.

His Excellency the British Ambassador to Israel hosts an annual reception at his residence where members and guests are addressed by both His Excellency and an invited speaker.
